[Medical Geology] International Medical Geology Association in Taiwan Established, NCKU Professor Jiin-Shuh JEAN Appointed as Branch Chair (Chinese Version)

NCKU Realtime News (2010/06/08) International Medical Geology Association - Taiwan Chapter (IMGA-Taiwan) was set up in Tainan in May; Professor Jiin-Shuh JEAN of Department of Earth Sciences, NCKU, was appointed as the chapter chair. Professor JEAN said, the association will spend effort on promoting the academic interests in medical geology by means of organizing forums, conferences, news releases and talent cultivation opportunities etc., as well as advancing its research dynamics and technology in Taiwan. Experts, scholars and students are welcome to join the association.

Taiwan Chapter of International Medical Geology Association is carried with the same intent as the original association, namely, to encourage the studies in medical geology, talent cultivation and education, and studies on environmental epidemics or bio-medical information. Chair Professor JEAN said, the establishment of the chapter will help with the formation of a nationwide research team on groundwater's arsenic contamination in Taiwan. In a long run, the the project will stress the study scope to Barasat area in India, studying the correlation between the residents' health and the arsenic contamination there.

Medical geology is an actively emerging interdisciplinary scientific domain. International Medical Geology Association in Sweden was set up and dedicated to the encouragement of the cooperation between disease prevention and control experts and earth sciences scholars, via which the environmental factors of the formation and development of various diseases may get explained more explicitly. During these years, the experts of the association have studied the basic principles of the environmental influences on animals and several basic significant natural elements which have impact on human and animal health. The scientific field is offering new means and methods on medical as well as geological studies.
