[Biology] Squid's Sense of Hearing Has First in the World Been Proved by Academia Sinica (Chinese Version)

China Times reported (2009/05/25), Academia Sinica – Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology's research team led by Hong Young YAN uses the method, developed under YAN's leadership, “auditory brainstem recording (ABR) system” and has proved for the first time in the world that squids are in possession of wide-ranged and sensitive sense of hearing. This is the first proof found in the world for cephalopod's sense of hearing, and may help improve the hunting techniques from traditional light-color entrapping to audio entrapping. The findings are presented in Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, drawing international attention, and the article gets evaluated as the most recognized article by the academic website “Faculty 1000 Biology,” whose download ranking has reached number three within two weeks.

Hong Young YAN pointed out, ibid., squids and octopi are the two major cases of cephalopod. Squids are found everywhere in the five oceans, and never observed as endangered under human's mass hunting and the natural enemies' threat, which means they must be in possession of fine “sense” to protect themselves from dangerous environment. Before the studies about squid sense mainly focused on sight. This time the team's research has proved that squids and octopi have hearing ability. The finding is likely to enhance the hunting skill of the squid and octopi fishers.
