[Medicine] NTU Invents Broadband MRI, Four Times Faster than Traditional MRI (Chinese Version)

NTU Newsletter (Issue 1002), Radio Taiwan International & Taiwan News (2010/04/09) NTU presented a new invention on April 9, a broadband magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device, whose image development time is four times shorter than the old ones. Application for patent of the invention has been submitted in Europe, the US, Japan, Taiwan and China; the development cooperation of the invention between NTU and Simens has also begun.

Professor Tzi-Dar CHIUEH, Department of Electrical Engineering, NTU, said that X-ray can only show the bone problems; as for the problems with the soft tissues such as muscle, ligament, blood vessel, etc., we need MRI. However, MRI development requires more time and more money. The development project led by Professor CHIUEH integrates resources of electrical engineering and medical imaging, applying the concepts of broadband signal processing in the field of wireless communications to build a new type of MRI system with high temporal-spatial definition. CHIUEH said, broadband MRI system uses the broadband network which allows for processing of multiple simultaneous signals at the same time, to increase the information volume rate of the MRI image development. According to the experiment's result, the development time of broadband MRI is four times shorter than the old ones while keeps the same image quality.

The invention is about to be patented in Europe, the US, Japan, Taiwan and China. NTU has also signed cooperation agreement with Simens, GE and Philips.
