[Environmental] Taiwan Needs to Face the Climate Change Issue: President MA (Chinese Version)

President's Weekly Journal & Radio Taiwan International (2009/12/12) Through the President's Weekly Journal issued on 12th-Dec., President MA, responding to the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) at Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark during 7th- to 18th-Dec., urges the government and people, for each individual's own sake as well as for the collection's, to take part in energy saving and carbon reduction.

In the present issue of President's Weekly Journal (2009/12/12), President Ying-jeo MA suggests people to face the climate change issue seriously. He says, the warming in Taiwan has been more radical than the global average during the last few years. Although Taiwan only takes 0.3 % of the global population, since 1990 about 1% of the total GHG volume has been produced by Taiwan, which definitely deserves our vigilance. Taiwan is neither one member of the contracting parties of United Nations Climate Change conference nor has Taiwan participated in the signatory of Kyoto Protocol (to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change); nevertheless, as a member of the global society, Environmental Protection Administration has set the goal to reduce the carbon emission during 2016 to 2020 back to the level of 2008, and then to lower the carbon emission back to the level of 2000 in 2025.
