[Infotech & Internet] Fiber to the Village! PLC Applied in Taiwan Remote Village (Chinese Version)

The Liberty Times (2009/08/05) Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and FETnet, associated by Ministry of Economic Affairs ( MoEA ) and National Communications Commission ( NCC ), inaugurated a PLC ( power line communication ) experimental network in a village at an elevation of 1200 meter, Dahu Village, Fanlu Township, Chiayi County, on 4th-Aug. The villagers of about one hundred households can enjoy 2M network simply by plug a PLC adaptor in the electrical socket without needing any internet cable. FETnet promised the villagers as well a two-year free network service. One student of Dahu Elementary School said it was so cool to surf the net with 2M transmission rate.

With PLC technology, repeating Chairman of FETnet Douglas HSU, networking in the remote areas becomes very convenient, and FETnet is open to the follow-up cooperation with Taiwan Power Company in construction of the network in other areas. According to Ming-Ji WU, Director General of Department of Industrial Technology, MoEA, the technology can be transferred to other interest telecommunication companies.

ITRI Manager Wen-Chin LEE says, FETnet completes the optical fiber wiring to Dahu connecting an equipment in the electrical system, and the villagers can connect to the wide-band internet via a PLC adaptor. No further wiring to each user-household is required. With PLC network, the villagers can enjoy not only the higher-speed internet, but even the internet phone.

Wen-Chin LEE continues, the bottleneck of PL communication is that the broadband transmission cannot “pass” voltmeters and voltage devices. Decades have been paid on this problem, and the breakthrough has just occurred, due to which Department of Industrial Technology thus decides to introduce the technology in Taiwan.
