[Cross-Strait Cooperation] Taiwan's Antarctic Expedition Returns Home (Chinese Version)

TVBS, CTS (2010/02/08) & CNA News (2010/02/06) The first group of Taiwanese researchers joining China's antarctic expedition has returned home after a three-month voyage, bringing back precious ecological data and the samples of new species they have found in the South Pole, including the expected new species of marine invertebrates they temporarily entitled “sea-tongue.”

Three researchers from Cheng-Shiu University, National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium and National Dong Hwa University cooperated with China's antarctic cruise expedition team; this is the first case of cross-strait cooperation in antarctic research. With the support of China's Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration, the three researchers from Taiwan were sent to the South Pole in two teams. Researcher Fu-wen KUO from National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium boarded the the ice-breaking boat Xuelong in October 2009 for Changcheng Site and Zhungshan Site in the South Pole. She will spend six months on her research in the South Pole and return to Taiwan in March 2010. Chia-Hsing LIN, Pingtung National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium and National Dong Hwa University, and Ting-wei HSU, Super Micro Mass Research and Technology Center, Cheng-Shiu University, took a plane to Changcheng Site in November 2009 and spent two months there.

Chia-Hsing LIN and Ting-wei HSU has completed their research and returned to Taiwan on January 31. On February 8 they attended a press conference in Cheng-Shiu University, exhibiting their achievement. They shared the experience of cooperation with scientists from several countries in the South Pole; they also showed the collected samples and the anti-freeze genetic Bank. “The Features of the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Antarctic Coast” and “Physiological Active Matters of Antarctic Animals” (trans. temp.) are their project titles.
