[Photon Source] Taiwan Photon Source Set to Break Ground (Chinese Version)

Executive Yuan's Government Information Office News, NSRRC Newsletter, CNA News & Now News (2010/02/07) National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, NSRRC, held the break ground ceremony for Taiwan Photon Source on February 7; Premier Den-yih WU, NSC Minister Lou-Chuang LEE, former President of Academia Sinica Academician Yuan-Tseh LEE et al. attended the event. Taiwan Photon Source is a mega-project conducted by NSC and Council for Economic Planning and Development, CEPD, aiming at creating new opportunities for Taiwan's cross-field and advanced sci-tech development. The construction of the synchrotron light source is estimated to complete in 2015, whose electron beam energy will reach three billion eV.

Lou-Chuang LEE pointed out the first photon source (1.5 billion eV) in Taiwan, which began to operate in October 1993, had contributed a lot to Taiwan's semi-conductor industry, making Taiwan have an influential hand in the global technology development. Under the present circumstance of rapid technology development, a new photon source can maintain the competitiveness. Lou-Chuang LEE also encouraged NSRRC to invite the enterprises to utilize photon source in bio-medical or green energy R&D.

Former President of Academia Sinica Academician Yuan-Tseh LEE said, photon science and application play a critical role in contemporary scientific development. It is internationally agreed that synchrotron light source is the most indispensable equipment to the 21st century sci-tech development; also, many basic and applied researches have actually relied thereupon. He hoped with the operation of the new generation photon source, more inter-disciplinary and globally competitive researches may be brought forth. Besides, he also aspired to the scientific enthusiasm in the younger generation caused by the “scientific Aladdin's lamp,” hoping to place them in a top advanced research environment so that they may accomplish profoundly influential discoveries.
