[Energy Issue] Scholar Urges: Renewable Energy Subsidy Policy May Result in More Energy Pollution (Chinese Version)

Awakening News Networks (2010/01/22) & udn.com (2010/01/20) An international forum on January 20 to 21, organized by the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD), brought together scholars and environmentalists from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Europe and the US to discuss energy saving and carbon emissions reductions. The participants contributed the experiences regarding idea promotion and business opportunities creation. The major themes of the conference included new energy, energy saving and Kyoto and post-Kyoto mechanisms. Issues such as new green policy facing the energy and economic crises, leading role of renewable energy in the forthcoming era, energy saving by infotech, global cooeration etc. were discussed.

Daigee SHAW, President of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, said on January 20 that it must be done to cancel the energy subsidy and to levy energy tax. The governmental subsidy to encourage enterprises' investment in renewable industry, repeating SHAW, may cause more intensed energy pollution if the energy net output is not properly assessed. He suggested to levy energy tax and environmental tax to support mass transit systems, reducing comprehensive income tax and enterprise income tax at the same time, so that the industrial structure may be adjusted.
