[Animal Medical Care] NTU Inaugurates the First Animal Cancer Center Combining Clinical Animal Medical Service in Asia (Chinese Version)

NTU Newsletter (Issue 992), Merit Times (2010/01/15), CNA News & National Education Radio News (2010/01/14) To meet the increasing need of animal health care as well as to develop better animal models for human cancer studies, College of Bioresources and Agriculture, NTU, has spent years on updating the equipment of its Veterinary Teaching Hospital, promoting the research in the pathogenesis of animal cancers, and developing therapeutic modalities for pet animal cancers. The genetic background of pet dogs or cats are closer to human's as compared to that of mice. In addition, pet animals share a very close environmental exposure as well as similar pathogenic factors with human. Therefore, the mechanisms of carcinogenesis between pet animals and humans share many commonalities rendering pet animal cancers as one of the most relevant models for human oncology research.

The newly inaugurated NTU Animal Cancer Center began to operate on January 14, 2010 simultaneously with the opening of the Animal Cancer Treatment Center of NTU Veterinary Teaching Hospital and its 16-slice CT (Computed Tomography scanner). NTU Animal Cancer Center is a functional organization integrating all relevant resources of clinical animal medical care and basic veterinary medicine research in NTU. It is the first integration case in Taiwan as well as in Asia. The Center will conduct research in the fields of pathogenesis of animal cancers, the clinical animal cancer registry in Taiwan, the probes and analyses in animal cancer epidemiology, the development and clinical trials of animal cancer treatments, international information bank of animal cancer medicine, etc.
