[Cross-strait Cooperation] Taiwan Researchers Join China's Antarctic Cruise for the First Time (Chinese Version)

Radio Taiwan International & udn.com (2009/10/08) Carried by the ice-breaker Xuelong, the largest Chinese antarctic cruise expedition team during these twenty-five years will set sail on 11th-October at Shanghai. This mission comprises 59 scientific projects, and, remarkably, three researchers conducting three of the projects come from Taiwan. This is the first Chinese antarctic expedition team in which Taiwan researchers take part.

The 26th Chinese Antarctic Expedition Team gathers at Shanghai on 8th-October, and they will leave for the South Pole by the ice-breaking boat Xuelong on 11th-October. 251 expeditionists will spend more than six months on 59 projects in the mission. It is the largest expedition with the most participants and heaviest undertakings since 1984 in China.

In April 2009, Xuelong once anchored by Kaohsiung Port, drawing a lot of notice as well as arousing a lot of passion for scientific expedition in Taiwan. Several researchers in Taiwan began to enthusiastically apply for participation in Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration's 26th cruise. Eventually three projects proposed by the Taiwan researchers had been approved.

Three proposals had been approved after a half-year reviewing and the several oversea visitings to Peking (Beijing) paid by the Taiwanese applicants: Ting-wei HSU, Super Micro Mass Research and Technology Center, Cheng-Shiu University; Fu-wen KUO and Chia-Hsing LIN, Pingtung National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium; the approved proposals include “The Features of the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Antarctic Coast and the Chronic Change of POPs in Filthy Soil” and “Physiological Active Matters of Antarctic Animals” (trans. temp.). The Secretary of the Party Committee of Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration Wen-liang WEI said, the cross-strait scientific cooperation will carry forth great contribution to the peaceful use of antarctic resources of mankind.
