[Wildlife Conservation] Typhoon Morakot's Heavy Rain Damaged Hydrological Ecosystem in Taiwan (Chinese Version)

BCC / PChome-News (2009/08/21) Typhoon Morakot (88 Flood) caused serious damage to South Taiwan, and at the same time also brought great lashes against the plant and animal ecosystems in this area.

Environmental activists pointed out that many birds, snakes and large mammals such as Formosan Macaque, Formosan Reeve's muntjac and Taiwan boars were under the influence of the great environmental change, though they were fortunately not really endangered; however, amphibians, which were difficult to scatter to other residence, faced greater challenges. Besides, heavy rain, added with mudflows in some areas, changed the terrain features and destroyed the forests.

Environmentalists were worried that the hydrological ecosystem in Taiwan might be the most affected among other wildling ecosystems for the typhoon directly caused gigantic changes to rivers. The disater areas were basically the ones whose hydrological biodiversity was relatively rich and which were not so sufferred from human interference yet in Taiwan. Typhoon and its heavy rain had massively changed the rivers in these areas. Hence, it was believed that the damage of river ecosystem might be our greatest environmental loss after the disaster.

Specialists said, after the disaster, ground strata were fragile. It would have to be carefully decided whether we let the environment recover itself or we artificially fix them for the sake of economic and traffic reasons. They exclaimed, the government had to take an overall consideration about homeland restoration.
