[Electro-Optic Materials] NTU Research Team's Breakthrough in Electro-Optic Materials Selected as Outstanding Research 2009 by 《Nanotechnology》(Chinese Version)

National Taiwan University Newsletter (Issue 990) The research achievement of Professor Miin-Jang CHEN and the team at Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTU, viz., “Efficient silicon heterostructure LEDs unveiled”, has been selected as this year's outstanding research by the international journal Nanotechnology.

Silicon is indirect bandgap semiconductor, so its luminous efficiency is very low. The team at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTU, has made a breakthrough in applying silicon nanocrystals. The team has successfully fabricated efficient silicon light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by embedding Silicon nanocrystals in a SiO2 matrix and combining it with an n-type Al-doped ZnO (n-ZnO) layer to improve the external quantum efficiency of silicon in the n-ZnO/SiO2-silicon nanocrystals-SiO2/p-silicon LEDs. The achievement can be further applied to suffice the optical interconnection in integrated circuit in the future. The achievement has been published in Nanotechnology; besides, it is selected as the highlighted article and reported on the international nanotechnology website “nanotechweb.org”.
