[Aerospace Sci-Tech] Taiwan NCT Research Team Broke the High Altitude Scientific Balloon Record (Chinese Version)

National Applied Research Laboratories, NARL, reported in the second issue of NARL E-paper (2009/06/05) that in order to develop Taiwan's space sci-tech capacity, NARL positively participates international spcae sci-tech projects. A research team of members also from National Tsing Hua University, National Central University and National United Univeristy, joined the Nuclear Comption Telescope, NCT, research-and-develop project of the Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley.

The team set off the high altitude science balloon at the 7:30 (New Mexico Time) on 17th-May, which flew in the high air layer about 36 t0 39 km above and carried instrument testing and measuring the aerospace gamma ray. The NCT scientific balloon took off in the Fort Summer Site of Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, CSBF, in New Mexico. The balloon landed after 38 hours at the south side of the super high way No. 40 around Arizona Grand Canyon, 865 km away. This is the longest record of inland traditional high scientific balloon flight.

NCT project is the initial preparation and trial for the next generation instrument and techniques measuring gamma ray-- Compton Telescope, which is expected to bring great help with the development of high energy physics and our understanding of the universe. The present flight has not only completed the test and verifcation of NCT equipments, but also observed and measured the gamma ray from Crab Nebula, Cyguns X1 and the other several active galaxies. NCT project has achieved its attempt at this flight, proving that NCT could conduct the next 20-day flight, and that NCT has been prepared for the satellite tasks in the future. This event has also furthered the record of Taiwan aerospace sci-tech development and international cooperations.
