[醫學] 陳定信院士榮獲歐洲肝臟學會國際肯定獎

中央研究院生命科學組院士、國立臺灣大學醫學院陳定信教授以其卓越的肝病研究之學術貢獻，日前榮獲歐洲肝臟學會（European Association for the Study of the Liver, EASL）頒發2009年 EASL 國際肯定獎（EASL International Recognition Award）。陳定信院士於4月24日親自前往丹麥哥本哈根歐洲肝臟學會舉行之第44屆大會，接受頒獎。

成立於1966年的歐洲肝臟學會（EASL）是全球肝病研究的主要領導機構，目前成員有全歐28國。近年來 EASL 年會皆有超過7000位各國專家參與，是具國際宏觀的高規格醫學專業學會。

陳定信教授目前為國立臺灣大學醫學院內科特聘教授並且為臺大講座，專研肝臟學。其研究團隊長期以來在 B 型肝炎致病過程、肝炎併發症、肝癌早期診斷與治療，以及 B 型肝炎病毒感染的預防等方面，都有極優異的研究成果。陳定信院士的研究團隊更針對慢性 C 型肝炎的治療，開發出新而有效的合併療法。目前這項合併療法已廣為全球醫界所使用，拯救過無數病人。

同時也是中研院生命科學組院士的陳定信教授係於1992年當選中研院院士，2001年當選第三世界科學院院士，並於2005年獲選美國國家科學院海外院士，且於2007年獲得我國總統科學獎。此次又獲歐洲肝臟學會頒與國際肯定獎，再度顯現陳院士長期對學術付出的努力，以及其傑出的醫學貢獻。

[Medicine] Academician Ding-Shinn CHEN Receives 2009 EASL International Recognition Award

Academician of Academia Sinica Dr. Ding-Shinn CHEN was awarded the 2009 International Recognition Award by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) for his outstanding contributions to the research and management of liver diseases. Dr. CHEN is to receive the award during a ceremony at the General Assembly of the 44th Annual Meeting of EASL in Copenhagen on April 24.

EASL is a leading European association in the field of liver research which was founded in 1966. It currently has 28 members. Recent annual meetings have attracted more than 7000 participants from all over the world.

Dr. CHEN is Distinguished Chair Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine National Taiwan University where he specializes in hepatology. The research of Dr. CHEN and colleagues has contributed to understanding of the natural history of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, the early detection and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma as well as the prevention of HBV infection. His achievements also extend to the hepatitis C virus with development of a new and effective treatment for chronic hepatitis C. The combination therapy of interferon and ribavirin has become a standard treatment worldwide.

Professor CHEN was elected Academician of Academia Sinica in 1992, a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2001 and Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2005. He was President of the International Association for the Study of the Liver (2004-2006) and in 2007 he earned the Presidential Science Prize of Taiwan.
