[Academic Activity] Dr. Max K. W. Huang to Lecture at Academia Sinica on Campaigning for Freedom of Thought during the Martial Law Era in Taiwan (Chinese Version)

Academia Sinica Newsletter (2010/12/03) Dr. Max K. W. HUANG, Director and Research Fellow of the Institute of Modern History at Academia Sinica, will deliver the Academia Annual Lecture in Honor of Former President Hu Shih on December 11, 2010. The lecture entitled "Campaigning for Freedom of Thought during the Martial Law Era in Taiwan: A Case Study of the Wenxin" will discuss the development of free speech in Taiwan during the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. HUANG will take as an example the Wenxin, a Taipei-based periodical, and argue that it sowed the seeds of liberalism and had a profound impact on Taiwan's democratization.

Taiwan was governed by martial law from 1948 to 1987, during which period freedom of speech was restricted. Most of the previous studies on the spread of liberalism during this period have focused on the Free China Journal, a periodical published by former Academia Sinica President Hu SHIH.

The monthly magazine the Wenxin was published between 1957 and 1968. In this lecture, Dr. HUANG will draw on the historical background, editorial topics and the intellectual influence of Hu SHIH and other scholars of the period to discuss the political implications of the publication. Dr. Huang will also examine how this publication, originally moderate in tone, became more politically forthright in later years. He will cap his discussion with an evaluation of the publication’s triumphs as well as its defeats in its promotion of liberal thinking.
