[Environmental] The First IWA Symposium on Lake and Reservoir Management - New Approaches for Managing Source Water to Meet Water Treatment Targets Takes Place in NCKU from 28th-Jun to 2nd-Jul (Chinese Version)

NCKU News Center – News (2009/06/24) The First International Water Association (IWA) Symposium on Lake and Reservoir Management will take place at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) between 28th-Jun. To 2nd-Jul. Environmental Protection Administration Deputy Minister Tzi-chin CHANG, Water Resources Agency Director General Shen-Hsien CHEN, Taiwan Water Corporation Vice President Nan-Jer HU, NCKU Vice President for International Affairs H. Jenny SU, NCKU Sustainable Environment Research Center Director Juuen CHANG and many water specialists will gather and discuss about the international current status and trends regarding water resource, water quality, and policies and technology of water management, suggesting ideas for Taiwan's water resource and quality management policies and drinking water source control.

The targets of the sumposium contains: (1) Promote sustainable management of drinking water supply reservoirs with the best science and technology; (2) develop innovative reservoir management practices that will complement and optimize water treatment effectiveness and cost for the range of challenges faced by water utilities; (3) nurture an interdisciplinary approach to lake and reservoir management (including fluid dynamics, biogeochemistry, microbiology, and aquatic biology and ecology) and consider the potential longer-term effects of climate change; and (4) provide a forum and network with an international scope and emphasis on the rapidly developing regions of the world.

International Water Association, IWA, is the biggest association in water profession, which connects over 100 countries or areas as its international members. This symposium also copes with the set-up of its Specialist Group on Lake and Reservoir Management.

IWA-SGLRM focuses on (1) applying new instrumentation and techniques for reservoir water quality monitoring; (2) implementing in-situ control strategies to remove nutrients from the water column in reservoirs; (3) adopting best practices in the management of cyanobacteria and algae; (4) using in-reservoir water quality management strategies that include: mixing and destratification, hypolimnetic oxygenation, novel algaecides and algal control, flocculants and nutrient binding agents, and biomanipulation; (5) evaluating reservoirs as barriers to or as sources of pathogens; (6) employing hydrodynamic and water quality models to facilitate understanding and optimize operations; and (7) actively integrating reservoir management and water treatment. Indeed, by considering their source water reservoirs as the first stage in the water treatment process, water treatment utilities should be able to simultaneously improve water quality and reduce treatment costs.
