[Academic] NTU Rates the Top One University in Chinese Regions in Shanghai Jiao Tong University's ARWU (Chinese Version)

NTU Newsletter (Issue 1017) Center for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, announced the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2010 recently. In the top 500 universities list, NTU ranked the 127th, moving up for 23 places comparing to its 150th in ARWU 2009, and remained the top one again in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. According to the NTU Newsletter, this had to be greatly obliged to the nation's 50-billion-in-five-years policy. Besides, in this year, NTU transcended National University of Singapore (145th) for the first time, and opened the distance between itself and Seoul National University (148th) in Korea. The first phase of the university's goal, namely, "first among the Chinese; then top in the world" had been achieved.

According to the statistics released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, NTU made the greatest progress in "the most highly cited number of faculties" (HiCi). Last year, the score was 10.3; this year, it was 16.1. And the number of theses published in decent academic journals such as Nature and Science also achieved significant progress, from 9.9 last year to 11.6 this year. As for other evaluation indicators, NTU saw slight improvements, as well. In sum, NTU's ranking was thus obviously upgraded to the 127th in the world.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University focuses on the academic performance of each university, and has begun and continued annually since 2003. Its main evaluation indicators include: the number of alumni winning the Nobel Prize and the Fields Medal (10%); the number of faculty members winning the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal (20%); the number of highly cited faulty members in various disciplines (20%); the number of theses published in Nature and Science (20%); the number of SCI, SSCI indexed papers (20%), and the per capita academic performance of the faculties with the institution (10%).

In ARWU 2010, the reputable universities in Asia were ranked as follows: the National University of Singapore was ranked 145th, Seoul University of Korea was ranked 148th, the Chinese University of Hong Kong was ranked 179th, the Tsing-Hua University of Beijing was ranked 191th, and the Peking University of Beijing was ranked 199th place.
