[Cloud Computing] Chunghwa Telecom and Quanta Sign Cloud Computing MOU (Chinese Version)

CNA News, Now News (2010/07/05) & China Times E-paper (2010/07/06) Cuhnghwa Telecom and Quanta Computer signed a cooperation MOU on cloud computing on July 5. President of Chunghwa Telecom Shyue-ching LU and President of Quanta Barry LAM attended the signing ceremony. The MOU indicated the formation of the alliance of Chungwha Telecom and Quanta for developing cloud computing services and solutions. The alliance will focus on the domestic market first and then extend to the Asia market.

Quanta is Chunghwa Telecom's third alliance after Microsoft and Trend Micro. In the first quarter of the year, Chunghwa Telecom had presented together with Microsoft the SaaS CRM (customer relationship management) helping small and medium enterprises manage the customer relationship with lower technology-based capital expenditures such as those on the server maintenance and relevant personnel cost. As President of Chunghwa Telecom Shyue-ching LU estimated, a new breakthrough will occur in the fourth quarter with regard to the clouding infrastructure part which Quanta will bring great contribution to.

VP of Chunghwa Telecom Yen-Sung LEE, who is in charge of the cloud computing business in Chunghwa Telecom, pointed out that the present cloud computing operating systems Chunghwa Telecom adopted are all external systems, including Microsoft-Azure's Hyper-v and Vmware. The company hoped that in the beginning of next year, the first internal cloud computing system can be implemented. According to LEE, cloud computing R&D personnel in Chunghwa Telecom has reached more than one hundred; the main points of the alliance with Quanta are the formation of a cooperation platform and the reach-down to the solid infrastructure, namely, the ICT-based SaaS. In the first quarter of next year a new OSS system is expected to occur, while the “Cloud Experience Center” will begin to operate in the fourth quarter.

Yen-Sung LEE said, in Chunghwa Telecom's plan, the Cloud Computing Center will consists of four computing centers: computing center for cloud service, for cloud test, for cloud R&D and for “cloud experience.” Among these four centers, Cloud Experience Center will be the first to cooperate with Quanta. He said, the alliance between Chunghwa Telecom and Quanta will proceed together in four directions: the development of cloud computing OS and platform, the development of SaaS services, the establishment of Cloud Test Center and the market development.

President of Quanta Barry LAM said, the development of cloud computing can be divided in two parts, viz., hardware and software, and Quanta has been well prepared regarding the 3C's for the hardware side (Cloudy Computing, Connecting, Client Device); for example, one million servers will be produced in this year, the number of which is already difficult for the other competitors to achieve. However, regarding the software, solutions and services these 3S's, the alliance with Chunghwa Telecom is necessary.
