[Disaster Prevention] Taiwan Presents the First Alert System with Low-frequency Radio Time Signals in the World (Chinese Version)

Merit Times (2010/06/27) & CNA News (2010/06/26) The government (Bureau of Standards, Metrology & Inspection, MoEA) and Chunghwa Telecom invented a natural disaster alert system along with their construction and enacting of the national standard time. The alert system will distribute warning signals to the timepieces with low-frequency radio time signals. Directed by National Communications Commission, Chunghwa Telecom invested great capital in the co-construction of the high counter-disaster and mobile phone base stations in Namasia Township, Kaohsiung County, which suffered a lot from Morakot typhoon disaster last year. The co-construction network begins to operate on June 26, and, at the opening ceremony, the disaster alert system was presented to the public.

Nowadays, in order to help with the synchronization of various walks of life enhancing the national competitiveness, some advanced countries such as Germany and Japan have begun to tell the national standard time not only via the telephone wire and internet, but also via wireless means. For the same reason, Bureau of Standards has been executing the plan to establish a low-frequency radio time signals distribution system as the means of telling the national standard time. Peculiarly, one additional function is added to the distribution system, which is believed to be the first case in the world, namely, the distribution of the alert for sudden natural disaster, including weather forecast, weather warning, mudslide alert, etc.

With the service, in the future, people can receive the government's alert about sudden natural disaster via the ordinary timepieces. Bureau of Standards explains, low-frequency is peculiar in its being not effected by landforms, weather condition, or power failure. The warning signals from the government can be delivered to the people or h via the watches or clocks instantly. The equipment is also very cheap, and its power-consumption is quite moderate – it can work for a long time with batteries.
