[Green Diplomacy] Luxembourg Green Party Supports Taiwan to Take Part in International Climate Collaborations (Chinese Version)

Taiwan Environmental Information Center & Taiwan Today (2010/05/21) Taiwan should be allowed to become a member of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Luxembourg Green Party said May 21 during a joint news conference in Taipei with Taiwan Green Party. Felix BRAZ, Vice President of the Green Party parliamentary caucus, pointed out that the European Parliament passed a resolution on March 10 urging that Taiwan be allowed to participate in the UNFCCC as an observer. BRAZ noted that Taiwan could benefit if it followed a path of green development similar to the one pursued by Europe. Co-Convenor of Taiwan Green Party Han-Sheng PAN said, this was a big breakthrough with regard to Taiwan's green diplomacy, as well as a breakthrough for Taiwan's sustaining in the present international environment; no matter what, urged PAN, “we must take measures that demonstrate to the world that we are a responsible nation.”

At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Felix BRAZ, Vice President of the Green Party parliamentary caucus and Member of Parliament of the Chamber of Deputies of Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, led a four-member delegation to Taiwan from May 17 to 21. The other distinguished members of the delegation were Claude ADAM, Member of Parliament, Henri KOX, Member of Parliament and Mr. Abbes JACOBY, the Green Party parliamentary caucus Secretary-General. Felix BRAZ pointed out, to cope with the serious financial and economical consequences of energy crisis and climate change, we need an energy revolution to change the present mainstream policies upon the basis of energy exploitation and environment damage, and everyone shall benefit from fighting against climate change.

European Parliament has always been friendly to Taiwan. Beside of supporting Taiwan to participate in the UNFCCC as an observer, with the strong advocacy of European Federation of Green Parties (EFGP), Taiwan has been allowed to participate in WHA several times and the arms embargo to China has been maintained. The Second APGN taken place in Taiwan recently also reached the conclusion to support Taiwan's participation in the global collaborations.
