[International Cooperation][Medicine] NCKU PhD Student's New Finding about Androgen Receptor's Effect on Hepatocellular Carcinoma Drew International Attention (Chinese Version)

NCKU Realtime News (2010/05/21) & Science Translational Medicine (2010/05/19) The collaboration research project of a PhD student Ming-Heng WU, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, National Cheng Kung University, and Professor Chawnshang CHANG, University of Rochester Medical Center, USA, has published its findings to prove Androgen Receptor (AR)'s impact on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. According to the findings, AR can promote the formation of HCC via adjusting the RNA transcription of hepatitis B virus (HBV), which indicate a new direction for liver cancer treatment: to suppress the AR in the liver cells with target treatment.

The research result came into serious notice in the field of hepatitis and liver cancer study. It was published and selected as the cover story of Science Translational Medicine (issued on May 20); besides, it was introduced to the public by the publisher of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), in Washington DC on May 20.

Ming-Heng WU said, according the the statistics, the infection of chronic hepatitis B virus is a key factor to the formation of HCC. The chance to get HCC is in direct proportion to the volume of HBV in the serum. Especially, male patients with hepatitis B have higher chance to obtain liver cancer than female patients. Besides, it is also known that if the AR is more active in the serum of the male hepatitis B patients, the chance to liver cancer is largely higher. These clues lead to a conclusion that AR must have a significant role in causing the HBV-induced HCC. However, there is so far no literature directly proving and clarifying these relations.

The cooperation project between National Cheng Kung University and University of Rochester Medical Center aims at exactly the problem. Ming-Heng WU, supervised by Associate Professor Yuh-Ling CHEN, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, NCKU, visited the laboratory in Rochester led by Professor Chawnshang CHANG and studied about the correlations between AR and hepatitis B. They produced HBV transgenic mice that lack AR to prove that AR can promote the HBV replication and lift the incidence of HCC. Besides, they also proved that by lowering the androgen density in the serum HCC cannot be efficiently cured. Alternatively, to suppress the AR in the liver cells is the correct way to treat HCC.
