[Aerospace] Formosat-5 Equipped with Domestically-Made Remote Sensing Instrument, Making a Milestone for Taiwan's Autonomy of Aerospace Technology (Chinese Version)

Radio Taiwan International (2010/02/02) The remote observing satellite Formosat-5, which is estimated to launch in 2013, will be equipped with a domestically-made optical remote sensing payload to carry out the earth observation task. The equipment is designed, produced and assembled totally domestically. Especially a “CMOS” (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) sensor, developed by local companies, will be used for the satellite imager in stead of the widely-adopted “CCD” (charge-coupled device) sensor, making a milestone for Taiwan's autonomy of aerospace technology.

The imager of a remote sensing payload is the converter of the optical signals to the electrical signals. CCD sensors are commonly used in satellites for the technical maturity and fine quality, but due to export control, they are not available in Taiwan. After a certain period of development, the performance of CMOS sensors is advanced to compare with CCD sensors. Hence, National Space Organization (NSPO) will adopt one type of CMOS sensor, developed by one of the local companies, to build the optical payload of Formosat-5. This is considered to indicate the growing of Taiwan's autonomy in aerospace technology development. Furthermore, if the program is achieved, it signifies that NSPO is competent to build high resolution remote sensing satellites measuring 500 kg. The development of aerospace technology in Taiwan will turn to a new page.
