[Sci-Tech Policy] Kaohsiung County Dredges Sinda Port for NSC's Ocean Research Institute (Chinese Version)

China Times E-paper (2010/01/06) & idn-news (2010/01/05) NSC is about to establish the south branch of “Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI)” in Sinda Port (Cheting Township, Kaohsiung County), and Kaohsiung County government promises a dredging project to solve the worries about the port's shallow inner channels. The establishment of TORI at Kaohsiung is expected to advance the related marine and tourism industries in South Taiwan.

Sinda Port in Cheting is selected to be the construction site of NSC-National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL)'s Ocean Research Institute because of its natural as well as developmental environment compatibility. The local government promises to offer an expandable environment with a 6.6 hectare site and a wharf sufficing four research ships to support the establishment. However, the research ships are usually sized with certain scales and hence require deep channels, which is still a defect of Sinda Port owing to long-term silting. To solve the worries, Kaohsiung County Governor Chiu-hsing YANG said, plans and budgets will be made to support the port dredging. Hopefully, the cluster effect induced by the Ocean Research Institute may enhance the development of marine industries in the greater Kaohsiung area.
