The Liberty Times & Merit Times (2009/12/25) ITRI-South held a joint year-end achievement show on 24th-December, presenting over forty innovative techniques. Among the presentations, the “High Transparent Solar Window” (trans. temp.) which transduces sunlight into electricity and reserves the power in the battery at the window frame, drew much attention. Facing global warming, the global society has been working on the technical development of power conservation and carbon reduction. The new technique of ITRI-South can transduce 20% to 50% of the solar power into D.C. electricity supplying for illumination or 3C equipment. If adopted in glass building, 20% to 30% of the total electricity consumption is estimated to be reduced.

The “High Transparent Solar Window Module” is made by inserting a PC diffusion light-guide plate between two glass panes, which can save 20% to 50% of the solar power into the battery at the frame. Its best photovoltaic efficiency is 8%. Besides, owing to PC plate's fine tenacity, the windowpane is also bullet-resisting and hence, beside of being an energy solution, becomes a security solution as well. The researcher Jui-Tang CHEN (陳瑞堂) said, the electricity supply in Taiwan is in form of alternative current, but the domestic 3C products require D.C. supply. In the process of conversion, 15% to 20% of waste is caused. The power supplied by the solar window is D.C. and hence can be 100% utilized. For instance, a 40cm x 80cm solar window with the noontime sunlight can generate power of four to six watt. With additionally replacing illumination equipment with LED lights, it is estimated that 15% of household power consumption can be reduced while 20% to 30% of glass building power consumption can be reduced. The install cost however is about the double of the ordinary gluing glass window's
