[Academics] Complicated Relationship between Hu Shih and Chiang Kai-shek Revealed in Special Exhibition (Chinese Version)

Academia Sinica Newsletter (2012/12/17) The details of the trials and tribulations of the relationship between Hu Shih (Shih HU) and Chiang Kai-shek (Kai-shek CHIANG) are being brought to light in a new exhibition organized by the Institute of Modern History. The exhibition, entitled “Hu Shih and Chiang Kai-shek: Different Paths Crossing” displays official documents, diaries and letters of historical significance, some of which are being shown to the public for the first time. The exhibition opens on December 17, 2012 at the Hu Shih Memorial Hall and will run for about two years.

The relics on display shed further light on a complicated and at times conflicted 30-year relationship between two giants of twentieth century China. Documents on display include the manuscript of Hu Shih’s statement about his expectation of “the mission of Academia Sinica,” which sharply contradicted Chiang Kai-shek’s vision for the institution. This document has not previously been shown to the public. In addition, documents such as Hu Shih’s critique of the Guomindang (c. 1929) as seen in publications such as The Crescent Moon magazine, and the Nationalist Government’s rebuttal in Ping Hu Shih Fan Dangyi Jinzu (Critique of Hu Shih’s recent work that opposed the Party’s Principle); and a letter written by Hu to Chiang Kai-shek on August 6, 1937, stating that before going to war every effort should be made to find a peaceful solution, will be on display.

Also on show is the letter from Changying YANG, wife of the eminent economist Duanliu YANG, to Hu Shih in 1926 referring to him and Chiang Kai-shek as the “Stars of the Civic and Military Spheres” in the early period of the Republic of China.

The exhibition opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., December 17 and includes a performance of well-known songs composed from Hu Shih’s poetry, such as “Orchid Grass,” “Dream and Poetry,” “Verse” and “It is the Tiny Cloud” performed by the Academia Sinica Chorus choir.
