[Disaster Management] Scientists: Seismograph Can Be Used to Monitor Mudslide (Chinese Version)

Awakening News Network & The Liberty Times E-paper (2009/10/16) Director of Taiwan Earthquake Research Center Cheng-Horng LIN found mudslide would induce one type of seismic waves which is different from the waves of earthquake. With the discovery as well as the government's setting more broadband seismometers, the scientists can find a way to monitor and alert us to mudslide, or to make fast, precise post-disaster positioning. The finding is globally leading.

After eight eight flood, Cheng-Horng LIN studied 55 broadband seismometers and found that at the time point when mudslide in Hsiaolin Village occurred, some irregular waves were recorded. After analysis, the seismic center of the waves was proved to be the location ten kilometers away from Hsiaolin mudslide. LIN explained that regular seismic wave would have an obvious starting point, entitled P-wave, and such wave would be very small, within five Hz in general. But the seismic waves induced by mudslide did not have a certain starting point, and the waves were larger than the earthquakes', more than 20 Hz.

By the further studies, Cheng-Horng LIN and the colleagues (such as Academia Sinica's Visiting Fellow Masataka ANDO and the Director General of Central Weather Bureau Tzay-Chyn SHIN etc.) discovered the way of full monitoring mudslide and real-time alerting by means of broadband seismometers.
