[Disaster Prevention] Taiwan Inaugurated First Undersea Quake and Tsunami Monitoring System (Chinese Version)

CNA - Focus Taiwan (2011/11/14) An undersea cable monitoring system was formally inaugurated off the country's northeast coast on November 14 which will buy between 10 and 20 seconds of warning in an earthquake and 10 minutes in the case of a tsunami, the Central Weather Bureau ( CWB ) said on November 14.

The 45-kilometer cable, goes from its land station in Yilan County's Toucheng into the Pacific.

The CWB said 70 percent of earthquakes to affect Taiwan originate off eastern Taiwan. However, as earthquake monitoring systems have been built on land before, they could not monitor undersea activities.

"With the inauguration of the undersea cable monitoring system, minor quakes undersea could also be detected," the bureau said.

The number of temblors detected in the next 12 months could reach 30,000, compared with the present figure of 18,000, the CWB said.

In addition to monitoring earthquakes and underground volcanic activities, the system could monitor abnormal sea wave surges from a depth of 300 meters and issue a tsunami warning.

The bureau expressed the hope that the 45-kilometer cable could be extended to 90 km, so that the quake warning time could be extended to 20 seconds, while the warning time for a tsunami could be extended to 20 minutes.
