Academia Sinica Newsletter (2009/10/02) The Pacific Neighborhood Consortium (PNC) 2009 Annual Conference and Joint Meetings will be held from October 6 to 8 at Academia Sinica. The topic of this year’s conference is "Social Computing".

The conference will highlight cutting-edge IT applications in digital archiving and e-learning, GIS in natural disaster prevention, and territorial and urban planning; and Austronesia Culture Study will be explored from the perspectives of archaeology, anthropology, linguistic families and racial change. In addition, the conference will showcase the up-to-date research into biodiversity in South China Sea. The conference will be divided into oral presentation and poster demonstration sections. In total there will be 6 keynote speeches, 17 sessions and 1 TELearn Conference. TELearn 2009 and GIS in the Humanities and Social Sciences 2009 will join the Joint Opening Ceremony on October 7.

Opening the conference on October 6, Dr. Stephen M. GRIFFIN, Program Director in the Information Integration and Informatics (III) cluster in the U.S. National Science Foundation's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems will give a keynote address entitled "Recovering the Past through Computation". He will discuss emerging state-of-the-art scientific methodologies applied to discovery, recovery, restoration, representation, analysis and ultimately new understanding of a broad range of cultural heritage artifacts.

On October 7, keynote Speakers will include Vice President Ts'ui-jung LIU speaking on the topic "Impact of Digital Archives on Humanities" and Dr. Edward AYERS, the president of Richmond, USA, who will give a talk on "Space, Place, and Time: Mapping Historical Changes". Since its initiation in 1993, the annual PNC Conference has become a key platform for access to digital research on the Pacific Rim. It is a key forum for interaction between scholars, technicians, librarians, museum professionals, educators, site managers working with cultural materials and technology. The PNC can be foreseen to have an ever increasingly important role in the scholarly community of the Pacific Rim as computing engulfs every aspect of our lives, and this year's topic of social computing is set to become a central theme in digital research over the next few years.
