[Infotech] Institute for Information Industry's 3D City Model Laser Scanner May Help with the Disaster Response (Chinese Version)

Economic Daily (2009/09/28) & Now News (2009/09/24) Institute for Information Industry (III) presents its “3D City Model Laser Scanner” at 2009 Taipei Int'l Invention Show & Technomart. This indicates the initial step toward the project to construct the 3D city data of the streetviews and the buildings' interior structures. The technique can figure out the precise geographical information and the surface materials of the scanned building. The collected data can be applied to virtual guide, building reconstruction, post-disaster management etc.

“3D City Model Laser Scanner” consists of a laser rangefinder, video camera, GPS and inertial navigation system. The equipments are carried by automobiles or other vehicles such as airborne vehicles. When the vehicle moves, the data are captured and accumulated. The 3D street as well as building's interior model reconstructed in accordance with the data captured can make up the shortcomings of satellite 2D map. Besides, the equipment can accurately figure out the building's geographical information and its surface materials. This function is very helpful with the reconstruction of the building or urban renewal. The virtual Taiwan landscape modeled with the data can be used to compare with the post-disaster landscape when another disaster occurs in the future, so that the corresponding position can be easily targeted, shortening the search time.
