[International Cooperation][Metal Industry] Taiwan-Japan Cooperation on Metal Technology, Upgrading Heavy Industries (Chinese Version)

Metal Industries Research & Development Centre News/Commercial Times (2011/10/07) To upgrade Taiwan's heavy industries, Metal Industries Research & Development Centre represented the relevant academic, research and industrial institutes in Taiwan and signed an MOU with IHI Corporation, the second largest heavy industries group in Japan, by which it was expected to introduce IHI's advanced technology in Taiwan, reform the technological basis for heavy industries in Taiwan and create more high value-added industries that reduce carbon emission and exclude risks.

The signing ceremony took place at IHI's headquarters. Chii-ming YIIN, Minister without Portfolio of the Executive Yuan, Neng-Chuan CHOU, Deputy Director General of Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Jen-kai KAO, Deputy Director General of the Department of Investment Services, Ministry of Economic Affairs, from Taiwan and the high-ranked officials of IHI attended the event witnessing the ceremony.

Heavy industries including metal industries, petrochemical industries, etc., took above 40% of Taiwan's total manufacturing output and represented the root capacity of Taiwan's overall industry, said Michael H. C. FU, CEO of Metal Industries Research & Development Centre, the signing representative. However, the root of the nation's overall industry was presently in need of advanced technology in order to cope with the rising demand of risk control and efficiency control.

FU said, Japan's steel industry and the related industries had advancing technology and tight relationship to Taiwan's steel industry. Many of the key components and equipments in the industry came from Japan, and the technological exchanges between two sides were frequent. With the MOU, the introduction of IHI Group's technology and experiences must be accelerated, which must greatly benefit Taiwan's heavy industries especially with regard to the formation of the key technology.

Taiwan had signed ECFA with China. Now the Taiwan-Japan MOU must bring the two sides in a closer relationship in the industrial chains, entering the Greater China Area market.
