[International Participation][Buddhica] The IABS XVIth Congress Held in Dharma Drum Mountain, Collecting More than 600 International Buddhist Scholars (Chinese Version)

Merit Times (2011/06/21) & Dharma Drum Mountain World Center for Buddhist Education (2011/05/31) The Olymics in Buddhist studies – the Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies (IABS) began its 16th Congress with the opening ceremony in the Dharma Drum Mountain World Center for Buddhist Education on June 20. Chair of the Congress Cristina SCHERRER-SCHAUB and President of Dharma Drum Buddhist College Huimin Bhikishu gave the opening addresses. During the six-day congress period, more than six hundred international Buddhist specialists from more than thirty countries gathered together and more than five hundred papers were presented in the event. This congress renewed the records in the history of IABS with regard to the number of the attending members and the number of presented papers.

Huimin Bhikishu said, the founder of Dharma Drum Mountain Master Sheng Yen was a frequent participant in IABS Congresses since he received his doctoral title, and he was also one of the founding members of the association. Three years ago when Dharma Drum Buddhist College was set up, Master Sheng Yen expressed his wish that Dharma Drum Mountain could have the opportunity to host a Congress of the IABS, so that Buddhist scholars in Taiwan might interact with Buddhist scholars from around the world for the benefit the Buddhist studies globally.

IABS was founded in 1978 aiming at promoting scientific studies in Buddhism and cultivating Buddhist talents at an inter-denominational stature. The association held its global Congress at three- or four-year intervals. The XVIth Congress this year was hosted by Dharma Drum Mountain, Dharma Drum Buddhist College and Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies.

Beside of the opening ceremony, IABS President Cristina SCHERRER-SCHAUB and its former General Secretary Tom TILLEMANS delivered keynote speeches, discussing the artistic presentation patterns of Buddhism and the impact of Chan meditation on the practice of mental intelligence.
