[Science Education][International Participation] Taiwanese High School Students Discover Asteroids (Chinese Version)

CNA (2011/05/27) A team of high school students from Taiwan has discovered four among the 22 asteroids lately found during an asteroid search campaign organized by the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) , an official from National Central University (NCU) said on May 26.

The team of more than 10 students made its discoveries in the 2011 Pan-STARRS Asteroid Search Campaign, held March 28-May 13. A total of 32 schools from seven countries participated in the program.

Wen-ping CHEN, Director of the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) program in Taiwan and an astronomy professor at NCU, said that the 22 asteroids have received provisional sequential numbers that are assigned to an asteroid when its orbit has been sufficiently determined. The number is usually superseded by a permanent designation once a reliable orbit has been identified.

The asteroids were discovered by analyzing images from the Pan-STARRS, an array of advanced equipment used to detect asteroids, stars and other celestial objects, said CHEN.

He added that the Taiwanese team will have the right to name the four asteroids at some point in the future.
