[Sinology] Fourth International Conference on Sinology Hopes to Expand Vision of Sinological Research (Chinese Version)

Academia Sinica Newsletter (2012/06/20) The “Fourth International Conference on Sinology” hosted by Academia Sinica starts today (June 20) and will last until June 22, 2012. In all, 289 scholars will speak at the large-scale conference which is expected to attract more than 1600 participants.

The conference is divided into 27 topics with 69 panel discussions. The numerous topics, which include “Medicine, Body, and Hygiene”, “Urban Culture and Life in Late Imperial China”, “Making and Representing Gender in Modern China” and “The Activities and Commercial Heritage of Modern Taiwanese Merchants in Southern Fujian”, endeavor to cut across disciplinary boundaries, and transcend the traditional confines of “Chinese” culture and Sinological research. It is hoped that the topics will reflect trends in Sinology over the last decade, and define new directions for future exploration.

Among the invited speakers, only 44% are from Taiwan, with the majority coming from countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Israel, Australia and New Zealand. From Academia Sinica, researchers from the Institutes of History and Philology, Ethnology, Modern History, Chinese Literature and Philosophy, Taiwan History, Linguistics, and the Center for Maritime History, Research Center of Humanities and Social Sciences will take part. Young scholars are particularly encouraged to join the conference, with 70 out of 289 papers being presented by younger scholars.

The Opening Ceremony was hosted by President WONG and the Keynote Address entitled “The Intellectual Climate of Sinology” was given by the Academician Fan-sen WANG, Vice President of Academia Sinica. The conference was convened by Academician Ying-Shih YU, and Academician and the Director of Institute of History and Philology Chin-Shing HUANG. Over the duration of the conference, five more keynote speeches will be given by Academician Cheng-sheng TU, Academician Yung-fa CHEN, Dr. Prasenjit DUARA from National University of Singapore, Dr. C.-T. James HUANG from Harvard University, and Dr. Dafydd GIBBON from Universität Bielefeld, Germany.
