[International Participation][IlluminationTech] Taiwan Deepens Involvement in Global LED Lighting Standards (Chinese Version)

CNA (2011/07/26) Taiwan is set to deepen its involvement in global solid state lighting (SSL) norms and standards following the establishment of two technical committees this month under the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE), or the International Commission on Illumination.

Taiwan became a member of the CIE in March 2010 after a Taiwanese affiliate, CIE-Taiwan, was established to boost LED/OLED lighting research and applications.

CIE-Taiwan, formed by the non-profit Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. and various Taiwan-based LED makers, has been functioning as a bridge between Taiwan-based and international LED lighting players and the sole channel of communication with CIE.

The establishment of the two CIE committees -- the Committee on Photometry of Curved and Flexible OLED and LED Sources and the Committee on Characterization of AC-Driven LED Products for SSL Applications -- marked a milestone in Taiwan's participation in establishing global standards for SSL applications.

With the establishment of the two committees, Taiwan has become a trailblazer of CIE standards and norms rather than a follower, said Hsing-sheng CHU, Vice President of ITRI, which is the prime mover behind Taiwan's participation in the world's SSL sector. CHU also serves as chairman of CIE-Taiwan.

According to CHU, Hsueh-ling YU, an ITRI specialist, will serve as chairwoman of the CIE Committee on Photometry of Curved and Flexible OLED and LED Sources. As of a day earlier, the committee has invited CIE members from China, Germany, Japan, South Korea and South Africa to take part in committee activities, CHU said.

Pei-ting CHOU, an ITRI manager, will chair the CIE Committee on Characterization of AC-driven LED Products for SSL Applications, according to CHU. Relevant national labs and leading thin-film manufacturers, as well as packaging manufacturers, from the United States, Germany, South Korea, China and Australia have also been invited to be committee members, CHU said.
