[Academic Cooperation] National Chen Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan; Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., USA; and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, Form A Global Research Institute

NCKU Realtime News (2009/08/27) National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan; Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., USA; and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, have signed to establish “International Institute of Biomedical Sciences and Technology” together. The center aims at accelerating research cooperation among countries in Asia, America and the Middle East. The scope of the center has been agreed to include cancer, infectious diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurologic disorders etc.

National Cheng Kung University is in possession of tremendous strength and resources in life sciences; it has an excellent medical school and two affiliated teaching hospitals. Technion-Israel Institute of Technology has the longest historical standing among the universities in Israel. It is also the national advanced research center in all aspects. This is one of the rare institutes of technology in the world which have a medical school so that bio-and-medical sciences can be directly integrated with nanotechnology, optical technology and the other technologies. Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., USA, has outstanding academic achievements in studies of neurologic disorders, diabetes, metabolism, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and infectious diseases. The school belongs to NYU with the other three medical academic centers. Many researchers, doctors, nurses and the relevant medical professionals are trained here. The cross-country “International Institute of Biomedical Sciences and Technology” will be directed by Research Officer of Upstate Medical University and Chairman of its Research Department Dr. Steven GOODMAN. Researchers from these three schools will assemble a founders' council which will meet once per year and plan the directions of development and the long-term goals. All of the three schools look forward to the cooperation, and they wish to invite other universities and medical schools in the world to the alliance.
