[Medicine] International Conference on Post-translational Protein Modification Took Place at Academia Sinica (Chinese Version)

Academia Sinica Newsletter (2011/11/11) Since the decoding of the human genome, Post-translational Modification (PTM) has become the next important issue for the scientific communities worldwide. Academia Sinica and Taiwan Proteomics Society (TPS) jointly organized a two-day conference entitled "International Conference on Functional Proteomics: Advances in Post-Translational Modification". The conference was held on November 14-15, 2011 at the International Conference Room of Building for Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica.

This milestone event was hosted by President Chi-Huey WONG. Experts invited from around the world will present the latest advances and techniques in the field of Post-translational Modifications.

The field of post-translational modification, usually referred as PTM, has surfaced to the top of genomics studies in recent years, making its mark in both basic research and human diseases studies including cancers and viral infections.

It is clear that life is far more sophisticated then a book of DNA codes. By the covalent addition of functional groups to proteins, the influence can be enormous and pertains to almost all aspects of normal cell biology and pathogenesis. The modifications can be grouped as phosphorylation, glycosylation, ubiquitination, methylation, acetylation, lipidation, and proteolysis.

In this two-day event, plenary speakers from the United States of American include researchers of Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California, Davis, UC San Francisco, UC San Diego, University of North Carolina, and the Scripps Research Institute; from Germany, Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry and Universität Bayreuth; from Switzerland, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich; and, from Spain, The Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas. Topics that will be covered spanning from phosphorylation, glycosylation, ubiquitination, protein structures as well as methylation. There will also be seven Short Talk sessions presented by local scholars.
