[Creativity] Taiwan Breaks New Record ! ITRI Wins WSJ’s Technology Innovation Awards 3 Years in a Row (Chinese Version)

ITRI Latest News (2011/10/13[sic]), Now News (2011/10/17), China Times E-paper & udn.com (2011/10/18) Wall Street Journal announced the list of winners for 2011 Technology Innovation Awards (TIA) on October 17. Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has emerged triumphantly from among more than 600 first class competitors across the world and won two first prizes with Spray IT and i2R e-Paper for the environment category and materials and basic science and technology category. ITRI has defeated the reputed international corporations including HP, Philips, Yahoo and AMRS and won two grand prizes. This is the first time Taiwan won the Wall Street Journal award three years in a row. It is an affirmation of Taiwan’s performance in research and development on the international arena.

Wall Street Journal officially released this good news in its technology section on October 17. The report on the environment category of Technology Innovation Awards pointed out:

“Heat-reflecting windows let in light without straining air conditioning. The top prize in this category went to the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan, or ITRI, for a spray insulation coating that can be applied to glass windows and other materials at a much lower cost than existing techniques.

ITRI's Spray-IT uses a tin-dioxide material laced with minute amounts of lithium and fluorine that can be sprayed on glass or building tiles. The material is less costly than the silver-based films that are commonly used in reflective materials, ITRI says, and can be applied without specialized equipment. The ability to use regular spraying methods means the product can be used on existing structures.”

In its report on Materials and Basic Science and Technology category on rewritable e-paper (i2R e-Paper) pointed out:

“The Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan earned top honors in this category for a reusable and recyclable electronic paper that can take the place of regular office printer paper.

ITRI says not only is its i2R e-paper less expensive than the costly rewritable printer products currently available, but also the cost could be comparable to that of conventional black-and-white inkjet or laser printing.

The i2R e-paper uses a special type of liquid-crystal technology to display text and other images on a bendable, thin plastic sheet. To print a document, the sheets are run through a simple device, similar to an old-style thermal fax machine, that heats the liquid-crystal layer, turning molecules light or dark. ITRI estimates that a single sheet could be reused 260 times before it would need to be replaced.

ITRI, a nonprofit research center, says it has licensed the i2R technology to Taiwan's ChangChun Plastics Co., which plans to begin pilot production of an e-paper product next year.”

The TIA of Wall Street Journal has long attracted international attention. Fierce competition is reported for this year’s 10th session which only 35 technologies were awarded. After winning championship with its fleXpeaker in consumer electronics category in 2009, ITRI again won the Overall Gold Award in 2010 with its FlexUPD; this year ITRI won top prizes with high weather durable transparent insulation material technology for the environment category and rewritable e-paper for material and basic science and technology category from among 605 entries of competitors around the world. Wall Street Journal again reaffirmed Taiwan’s performance in R&D on green energy and display technology. The judge panel of the award comprises of members from around the world including experts and scholars of reputed research institutions of various fields, joint venture companies and corporations. The award not only stresses technology innovation but future applications and business opportunities.
