[BioTech] NCHU Identifies Fingerprint of Antrodia Camphorata Yielding Its Quality Control Basis (Chinese Version)

NCHU News (2011/07/28) A research team at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) that had identified the anti-inflammatory effect of Antrocamphin A in Antrodia Camphorata last year, discovered that the representative ergostane of the fruiting body of Antrodia Camphorata – Antcin A, is also anti-inflammatorily active. Moreover, the team also identified 13 representative compounds in the Antrodia Camphorata carpophore, constructing its fingerprint as the basis of the appraisement, quality control and grading of Antrodia Camphorata.

The Top Research Center for Agricultural Biotechnology (trans. temp.) at the university was organized directly by the president Jei-Fu SHAW and consisted of two subdivisions, namely, the division of Antrodia Camphorata functional genomics and the division of biotechnology research. Recently four papers by the teams have been accepted by Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

Professor Sheng-yang WANG at the Department of Forestry, NCHU, said, the nine-month cultivated Antrodia Camphorata carpophore has similar composition with the wild one, and the team proved that the species of the tree stems for cultivation have significant impact upon the chemical composition of the carpophore, which can be ascertained through DNA fingerprinting.

An MA student at the Department of Forestry Ting-yu LIN (trans. temp.) said, the representative triterpenoids of Antrodia Camphorata including “ Antrocamphin A”, “Antcin A”, “Antcin C” and “ Antcin B” are all active in anti-inflammation. Spending one and a half years on analysis, he succeeded in identifying 13 indicative compounds in the fruiting body of Antrodica Camporata, upon which the basis of its DNA fingerprint was provided.

LIN said, with the fingerprint, the criteria for appraising the quantities of the triterpenoids or the qualities of the product can be obtained, which is very helpful with the establishment of the product examination system.
