[Academic Activity][History] 2011 Lecture in Honor of Former President Shih-Chieh Wang - Why do diseases have history? (Chinese Version)

Academia Sinica Newsletter (2011/03/07) Academician Angela Ki Che LEUNG, Chair Professor and Director of the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, will deliver a lecture in honor of Former Academia Sinica President Shih-Chieh WANG at Academia Sinica on March 12, 2011. The lecture is entitled "Why do diseases have history?"

Diseases are not purely objective physiological phenomena; they are often interpreted differently according to different cultures, religious beliefs and languages. In other words, understanding diseases from a historical point-of-view is also an effective way of understanding the social and cultural aspects of a civilization's history. In her lecture, Academician LEUNG will present the history of selected disease as a means of interpreting of Chinese civilization.

Dr. LEUNG is a medical historian who specializes in studies of China, and studies of those who live on the margins of society with little or no social, economic, political and cultural power. She has written several books including Leprosy in China: a history (2009) and Medicine for Women in Imperial China (2006), both in English.

Her latest book, Health and Hygiene in Chinese East Asia: Policies and Publics in the Long 20th Century (2010), is an extensive history of hygiene and public health in East Asia from the late nineteenth century onwards, edited together with Dr. Charlotte FURTH, Professor Emerita of Chinese History at the University of Southern California. In addition to books, Dr. LEUNG has also published numerous articles including studies on the dissemination of knowledge of traditional Chinese methods of smallpox inoculation, and state and private medical institutions in the lower Yangtze region in Ming-Qing China.

Every year Academia Sinica holds lectures to honor its late presidents. Dr. Shih-Chieh WANG was the fourth president of Academia Sinica from 1962 to 1970.
