[Disaster Prevention] NCREE's Earthquake Realtime Alert System Helps Gain Time to Escape (Chinese Version)

The Liberty Times (2011/02/23), RTI & NowNews (2011/02/22) Earthquakes happen frequently in Taiwan. In order to strengthen the prevention, National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), National Applied Research Laboratories, spent three years developing an earthquake realtime alert system which can inform of the occurring of an earthquake 10 to 30 seconds earlier.

National Applied Research Laboratories and Central Weather Bureau has begun the cooperation on developing earthquake alert systems. The system developed by NCREE surpasses others for it can gain more critical time slot to escape with its rapid operation.

Earthquake waves can be divided into the vertical P-wave and the horizontal S-wave. P-wave goes faster with weaker force while S-wave goes slower with very strong force. NCREE's system utilizes the time difference between them and can already give effective alert at the location 30 kilometers away from the earthquake center. The trial system equipped in Yilan Elementary School succeeded in gaining six seconds at the earthquake occurred on January 31 afternoon.

The researchers will try to combine the alert system with mitigation technology to construct the first intelligent earthquake mitigation system in Taiwan which can be equipped in elevators, power web, gas pipelines, escape fixed lines and public mass transits such as high speed rail.
