PTS News (2011/01/12) Taiwan is an island surrounded by the ocean, and the Taiwan waters are in possession of rich assets, including cultural ones. Taiwan takes an important position on the silk-road of the sea down the ages, and hence plenty of ruins and shipwrecked artifacts could be found in its waters, through the findings of which the studies of both of the history of Taiwan and the world history could be greatly benefited. Council for Cultural Affairs and Academia Sinica thus decide to form a submarine archeological research team together to survey these assets of Taiwan waters.

According to the written history as well as the oral history taken from Magong area, it is estimated that there could be several hundreds or even above one thousand ships sink in the area. In 2001 UN put the Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural into effect, according to which the mining of the submarine artifacts are not allowed with commercial interests. The archeological team points out, because the Taiwan law system still misses this part, these rich cultural assets in the Taiwan waters are facing a juncture.
