[Academic Activity] Professor Konstantin Novoselov, 2010 Nobel Laureate in Physics, to Lecture at Academia Sinica (Chinese Version)

Academia Sinica Newsletter (2010/11/08) Professor Konstantin NOVOSELOV, this year’s Nobel Laureate in Physics, gives a lecture on November 15, 2010 at the 2010 International Symposium on Graphene, Carbon Nanotube and Ultrafast Phenomena of Nanomaterials to be held in the Building for Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica between November 15 and 16, 2010. The lecture entitled “On experimental aspects of graphene” will focus on Professor NOVOSELOV’s prize-winning research.

Professor NOVOSELOV, together with Dr. Andre GEIM, were awarded the Nobel Prize in October this year for their "groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene”. According to the two scientists, graphene is a flat monolayer of carbon atoms tightly packed into a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, and is a basic building block for graphitic materials of all other dimensionalities. It exhibits exceptionally high crystal and electronic quality, and has already given rise to a host of new physics and potential applications. Born in August, 1974, Professor NOVOSELOV had just turned 36 on receiving the Nobel Prize.

The symposium is being held jointly by Academia Sinica’s Research Center for Applied Sciences and Research Program on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology; the College of Photonics at National Chiao Tung University; the Taiwan Chapter of the Asian Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Association; the National Nanotechnology Bridge Program Office; and the Chinese Chemical Society of Taiwan.

Alongside the lecture by Professor Novoselov, the conference will feature talks from over 20 speakers worldwide, including Dr. Peter RENTZEPIS, a professor of the University of California at Irvine and a member of the US National Academy, and Dr. Hiromichi KATAURA, a professor of the University of Tsukuba and Senior Research Scientist of the Nanotechnology Research Institute at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan.
