[Sci-tech Policy] President Ying-jeou Ma: to Make Bio-tech Industry Next Trillion in Four Years (Chinese Version)

RTI, Now News & CTS (2010/07/22) President Ying-jeou MA attended and addressed to the opening ceremony of “Bio Taiwan 2010” (the conferences and exhibition). He pointed out, the government has kept promoting bio-tech industry development by means of, for examples, supporting the raise of venture capital and the building of incubation centers, expecting that the outcome value of the industry can reach trillion NT dollars in four years. Besides, he also mentioned, a global-level trade fair will be held in October, in which bio-tech industry will be considered a hot spot of the investment soliciting.

When President MA visited the expo, he showed special attention to the 3D brain neuro-image section of National Tsing Hua University; he wore the 3D goggle to experience the 3D virtualization of the neuro-networking of the Drosophila brain at the booth. The technology is intended to solve the mystery of Alzheimer's disease. President MA said, when he received the “Father of DNA” Dr. James D. Watson in March, he was impressed by Dr. Watson's high evaluation and amusement of this technology.

President MA stressed, bio-tech industry is the most popular industry nowadays, and hence the government will continue to invest and to encourage the investment in the industry, as well as to help elevate the competitiveness of local enterprises. To be more concrete, beside of the effort on the legislation of industrial innovation act, the business income tax rate has been reduced from 25% to 17 % in order to encourage investment. He also hoped that the total R&D investment in Taiwan can reach 3% of the GDP in two years.

Bio Taiwan 2010 (conferences and exhibition) was held in Taipei World Trade Centre Hall (No. 1) during July 22 to 25. Over four hundred companies participated in the expo while over eight hundred booths were occupied.
