[Cross-Strait Cooperation] China's Fourth Arctic Expedition about to Launch Next Month, Scientist from Taiwan Join the Voyage for the First Time （Chinese Version）

CNA News & CD News (2010/06/26) China News Agency reports on June 26 that China's fourth arctic expedition will leave Xiamen for the North Pole on July 1; for the first time, a scientist from Taiwan will participate in the voyage.

By now, the team of the expedition has been formed. The ice-breaking boat Xuelong has been moved from the Shanghai site to Xiamen. The ship will set off on July 1 heading for the Arctic Ocean and return to Shanghai on September 23.

The expedition of 122 team members consists of scientists, rear-service personnel and media. Seven among the participated scientists come from the U.S., France, Finland, Estonia and Korea. The leader of the expedition is Jun WU, Deputy Director of Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration; the Chair Scientist is Xinguang YU, Director of Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration; the captain is Quan SHEN from Polar Research Institute of China.

Among the team members, the biodiversity researcher Dr. Yun-chih LIAO, Academia Sinica, from Taiwan is remarkable, for he is the first scientist from Taiwan joining China's arctic expedition, while last year we have the first scientists from Taiwan participating in China's antarctic expeditions.

According to China News Agency, the expedition will focus on the mechanism of the rapid sea water variation in the Arctic Ocean and the Ecological system's reaction to the rapid environmental changes. The research scope will include Bering Sea, Bering Strait, Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea, Canada Basin, Mendeleyev Ridge etc. The atmospheric changes which are related to the iceberg melting and the cross-field ecological studies will be included in the objectives of the expedition as well.
