[Popular Science Education] Central Weather Bureau Introduces NASA's Spherical Demonstration System in Taiwan (Chinese Version)

China Times E-paper To promote popular science education, Central Weather Bureau purchased NASA's “Science on a Sphere” exhibition system, which can dynamically present various information of the Earth in a spherical display. The system begin to operate from June 25 on, and between July 1 and 5, a public special weather exhibition was planned to be held. Out of the U.S., only seven places in the globe have the demonstration system, two of which are in Taiwan. With the dynamical spherical display, people can watch the real time satellite image, sea water temperature variation, or seismic information etc. as if they were looking the earth from the outer space. Besides, the system can also mimic other planets.

“Science on a Sphere” consists of a globe display (173 cm in diameter), four high resolution projectors and a high-speed computer with a specific program designed in the U.S. With the equipment, a whole new perspective to observe the Earth as if looking from the outer space is presented to the public. According to Central Weather Bureau, twenty types of realtime information of the Earth are directly linked to the system, so we can actually observe the Earth's realtime states vividly. Around the globe, the system designed by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), of the U.S. is only installed in forty-nine institutions. Including the one installed in National Museum of Natural Science, Taiwan has two sets of the system.
