[Bio-technology] Taiwan Develops the First Middle-Sized Fluorescent Fish in the World (Chinese Version)

PTS News, The Liberty Times & Udn.com (2010/06/25) The ornamental fish development technology in Taiwan has advanced. Council of Agriculture and Academia Sinica cooperate on and succeed in the development of the first middle-sized fluorescent fish in the world. According to the researchers, once this kind of fish enters the market, the output value per year may reach 2 billion NT dollars.

This new kind of fluorescent fish is very special; with very unique bio-techniques, the researchers make the fish body fluorescent and enlarge its size. Assistant Research Fellow at Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology, Academia Sinica, Jyh-Yih CHEN explained, to make the fluorescent fish possible, the team selected and developed the promoter of mylz2 to accelerate fluorescent protein, and then injected the artificial fluorescent protein gene in the ovum, similar to the single injection technique for test-tube baby. The result and relevant information about the development techniques have been published in Fish and Shellfish Immunology.

Fisheries Agency Director-General James SHA said, according to the announced gene transfer technology regulations, the fluorescent fish needs to pass the field test proving that this kind of fish cannot reproduce in the field and will not effect the eco-balance. Only then, the Fisheries Agency will grant the certificate for the fish.
