[Academic Activity] Nobel Laureate Dr. Ahmed H. Zewail to give Lecture Entitled “The Nanoworld in 4D” at Academia Sinica (Chinese Version)

Academia Sinica Newsletter (2010/06/24) Dr. Ahmed H. ZEWAIL, the 1999 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), will give a lecture at Academia Sinica on June 29, 2010. The lecture entitled “The Nanoworld in 4D” will provide an overview of some frontiers in the nanoworld and explore new developments for visualization of behavior in space and time. Dr. ZEWAIL will conclude the discussion with an outlook on applications in materials and biological sciences. Members of the media are welcome to attend.

Dr. ZEWAIL was awarded the Nobel Prize “for his studies of the transition states of chemical reactions using femtosecond spectroscopy”. His pioneering investigation of fundamental chemical reactions, using ultra-short laser flashes, on the time scale on which the reactions actually occur, allows scientists to understand and predict important reactions.

Dr. ZEWAIL has been a faculty member at Caltech since 1976. He is also the Director of Caltech’s Physical Biology Center for Ultrafast Science and Technology. Dr. ZEWAIL is also the head of the Moore Foundation’s Center for Physical Biology at Caltech. He was also the Director of the National Science Foundation's Laboratory for Molecular Sciences from 1996 to 2007. Since receiving his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974, Dr. ZEWAIL has mentored more than 300 members of his research institute and published more than 500 articles and treatises.

Dr. ZEWAIL has garnered many honors and awards from around the globe. He was decorated with Orders of State and Merit from several nations, including the Order of the Grand Collar of the Nile (1999), Egypt's highest state honor. Among other honors are the Albert Einstein World Award, the Benjamin Franklin Medal, the Leonardo Da Vinci Award of Excellence, the Robert A. Welch Award in Chemistry, the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, the King Faisal International Prize in Science and the Othmer Gold Medal from the Chemical Heritage Foundation, Philadelphia. Dr. ZEWAIL has been honored by Egypt and Ghana with postage stamps issued in commemoration of his contributions to science and humanity.

Dr. ZEWAIL currently serves on President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and also as a US Science Envoy to the Middle East. He is an elected member of numerous academies and learned societies, including the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of London, the French Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Dr. ZEWAIL also received honorary degrees from over 30 top international institutions, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Peking University, École Normale Supérieure and the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. ZEWAIL will visit Taiwan from June 25 to June 30. Besides his lecture at Academia Sinica, during his visit, Dr. ZEWAIL will be presented an Honorary Doctorate from National Chiao Tung University on June 26 and will deliver a lecture during the university’s graduation ceremony. He will also give a lecture at National Yang-Ming University on June 28. All of his lectures in Taiwan are sponsored and organized by the Sayling Wen Cultural and Educational Foundation in collaboration with the University System of Taiwan, the Research Center for Applied Sciences of Academia Sinica and the Asian Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Association.
