[Environmental] The Common Red Algae in Neritic Zones Is Vanishing (Chinese Version)

Now News (2009/11/20) National Taiwan Ocean University held a conference representing its long term investigation about the oceanic red algae. Professor Showe-Mei LIN, Institute of Marine Biology, NTOU, pointed out that, according to her long term monitoring since 1992, Taiwan red algae's number and the length of its growth period were significantly decreased, indicating that the red algae was vanishing.

She said, Taiwan was in a highly endangered geographical position under present circumstance of climate change and global warming. She spent a long time on neritic algae, investigating its special life history, in Kenting National Park and North-east Taiwan sea area. She found that, because of the human development and the global warming, the red algae habitats had gradually disappeared. Also the diversity of algae became poor. The coral reef ecology along Taiwan coastline was highly endangered. She urged the public to care about the influence of global warming on the oceanic ecological systems.
