[Communications] Due to Typhoon Morakot, 6,300 City Telephones and 550 Cellular Phone Antennas in South Taiwan Broke Down, Chunghwa Telecom Offered Satellite Phones for Disaster Relief (Chinese Version)

BCC (2009/08/10) Chunghwa Telecom expressed, due to Typhoon Morakot, plenty telecommunication equipment had been damaged. Statistics compiled by 18:00 on 9th-August showed the damaged communication equipment included 6,300 city telephones, two drown telecommunication facilities, 17 disconnected relay optical cables. Chunghwa Telecom was making urgent repair on the breakdown facilities, and at the same time had called for 54 satellite phones for the disaster relief.

According to Chunghwa Telecom, three celluar phone antennas of the most seriously damaged Linbian Communication Facility had been repaired; most of Linbian area could regain the service after the morning of 9th-August. Besides, 8 cross-area telephone cables had been recovered on 9th-August evening, and two public telephone bus for the victims was provided, too. As for Taimali Township, Taitung County, the downpour washed out the groundwork of roads, cutting off the outward communication connection of the remote area south to Taimali. Chunghwa Telecom called for satellite phones, and the army helped deliver them by helicopters to the township halls of Daren, Dawu and Jinfong for emergent communication.

Datung communication facility in Rende Township, Tainan County, was drown, too, causing disconnection of city telephones and cellular phones. The facility was repaired at 14:45 on 8th, and people could regain the outward contacts at Datung facility (No.114, Sec. 1, Bao-an Rd., Rende Township, Tainan County 717). Ten free temporary telephones were wired for the people.

Alishan area in Chiayi suffered from mountain rail and roads' slumping. The outward relay optical cables were out of order. Yet, with emergent microwave communication systems, the city phone and cellular phone communication was still available.

Besides, due to the electricity shortage or breakdown, there were about 550 communication facilities in disorder. 371 of them were due to black-out and would return to normal as soon as the power supply was normal again. The rest were still under urgent repair.

Chunghwa Telecom promised to offer the following to the people in disaster areas: reduction of telecommunication monthly rental, free replacement of the damaged SIM card, broadband modem and set-top box etc.
