[Disaster Prevention] Seeing the Setback of Japan Earthquake, NSC Plans to Build Tsunami Database (Chinese Version)

CNA (2011/03/13) National Science Council (NSC) Minister Lou-Chuang LEE told the press on March 13 that a Tsunami database will be provided for tsunami forecast regarding the wave height, hitting time point and impact estimate in the future.

Japan Earthquake caused serious damages and induced worrying nuclear leakage. On March 13, President Ying-jeou MA held an emergent gathering in response to Japan Earthquake catastrophe for the preparation and prevention of its possible impacts on Taiwan. After the gathering, Government Information Office held a press conference revealing the contents of the meeting to the public.

In the press conference, Lou-Chuang LEE said, although Taiwan's coastal landforms already provide us with natural prevention so that tsunami won't directly hit inland areas and the waves do not easily accumulate energy along the coast, we have to take the tsunami catastrophe in Japan as the warning setback and try to build a national database of tsunami right now.

Lou-Chuang LEE said, the database will collect information of the tsunamis arriving at Taiwan from different sources and calculate how long they may take to hit the coast, how high the waves can reach and how far they may invade inland. Upon these data, a dynamic model will be constructed for evaluating the tsunami's impact on the bridges, airports, and buildings.

Lou-Chuang LEE said, the database will be included in the present earthquake damage evaluation system. After the construction, we will know about the disaster prevention hot spots before the tsunami occurs.
